The Food

Food is the fundament of the

Babirwa experience

Where nature sets

the menu

Food is our connection to the soil. Driven by sustainability and the creation of authentic dining experiences, our perspective echoes a commitment to community and tradition.

From our

Greenhouse

Our chefs hand-pick fresh herbs – curry leaves, rosemary, thyme, basil, and fennel – from our greenhouse, where the scent of the next meal fills the air. Lavender, chamomile, viola, and lemongrass teas complement our warm scones.

Amidst fruit trees and the largest ancient blackberry tree in the Waterberg, our citrus orchard and seasonal harvests uphold our promise of sustainable, organic cooking. Free-range hens gift us fresh eggs daily, while spring rains bring pumpkins, amaranth, and a rainbow of greens – from cabbages to artichokes and vine tomatoes. Barbirwa is truly an extension of the soil that sustains us.

Local chefs, led by Lizzy Taolela, craft a sensory dining experience that blends safari flavours with a touch of home. Guests can choose from intimate or relaxed settings, from farm-fresh meals in The Green House to wood-fired pizzas, breads, and charred maize. Outdoor dining has become a favourite, combining food, wellness, and nature. For families or corporate retreats, boma dinners offer open-flame feasts featuring game, Cornish chicken, or fish roasts prepared in true Barbirwa style.

“My cooking style has always been about preparing food with love, using herbs from the garden and embracing tradition”  – Chef Lizzy Taolela
