A naturally immersive

bush experience

to disconnect

Babirwa is a beautiful private escape set in indigenous bushveld surrounded by rolling hills. This sustainable bush environment combines the beauty of nature with the warmth of African hospitality. Here, our Babirwa team welcomes guests personally and professionally.

Our secluded suites are our guests’ home-away-from-home, each with its own unique interior and relaxing ambience, offering the traveller an experience that blends five-star comfort with culture and conservation. What sets Babirwa apart as a destination is that it is inspired by African customs and traditions so that guests can not only enjoy nature but can also connect with the local Babirwa people.

Babirwa

was settled on a historic tin mine

Originally, Babirwa was settled on a historic Rooiberg tin mine (1905-1914) in the Waterberg district of Limpopo province, South Africa. The remoteness of the mine is exactly what makes Babirwa so desirable as a bush destination today. The ground and lands were rehabilitated for long-term sustainability and natural conservation. Today it is a secluded private game farm that contributes to the conservation of the Waterberg, and to responsible wildlife, safari and cultural tourism. The game farm generates revenue for local and national infrastructure development. The name, Babirwa, is that of a family clan, honouring the heritage and family roots of the Babirwa people from the northern parts of Limpopo.

Villa Royale

Our flagship suite

Villa Royale

A stay at Babirwa makes an indelible impression on our guests, many of whom return. Villa Royale is our flagship accommodation comprising two suites with stunning interiors and seating spaces, firepits and indoor and outdoor fire places, and amenities that include a private infinity pool, outside bar and lounge. The Villa Royale appeals to couples or small families who appreciate architectural open spaces, and classic African artworks gathered over time.

The Game Farm

The Game Farm

Every season at Babirwa has a theme. Here in the undeniably beautiful Waterberg region in Limpopo, we make the most of where we are, what we do, and what we eat. In the spring, when the earth and the animals bring forth new life, we celebrate our naturally grown produce, and spot young antelope at the water at sunrise.

In summer, during impossibly lovely days and longer evenings there is so much choice, including our famous dining under the stars, where the vast expanse of the Milky Way can be experienced. The autumn is long and warm and we shake up perfect, classic cocktails against the backdrop of glorious sunsets. But winter is very special, too. Our guests snuggle round fires pits and fire places, cuddle hot water bottles in the evenings while hearing local stories deep into the night, or are cosily blanketed against the cold on a game vehicle before indulging in a comforting dinner.

Wildlife

The Wildlife
Babirwa‘s bushveld is a reminder of the biodiversity we protect, and we are home to spectacular range of antelope species. You will find kudu cows quietly feeding on leaves, adapted to our environment, and roan antelope, one of the continent’s largest rare species. Their presence here forms part of a conservation initiative to help grow their numbers in the wild.

Nature

Babirwa’s utterly delicious bush cuisine is a big feature, and our menus are both seasonal and sustainable, inspired by nature. The greenhouse walk is a must, where guests learn about the ingredients that feed our souls. It’s every chef’s dream to work with organic food, and we have a culinary head start, as all our vegetables and herbs are grown on our land.

Our treatments

blend traditional therapy

with African Wellness

During the warm days, we offer an outdoor spa experience that transforms and heals our guests. Located in a tranquil natural setting,  the spa brings nature closer, and includes a swimming pool and nature walks, against a background of the sounds of nature. Our therapists blend traditional spa therapy with wellness and breathing techniques, with the scent of hand-crafted marula candles adding to the immersive experience. Our guests are welcomed with time-honoured rituals using replenishing salts and ceremonial hand-washing, where they inhale the peace of the bush with medicinal herbs such as impepho, translated as incense – an African herb, and fragrant marula oil.
